Lee R. Taylor, Senior Partner, holds a B.A. in Psychology from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and his J.D. law degree from the Mercer University School of Law. While still in law school, he had already started his career in the legal profession as part of the university’s third-year practice program. Taylor has considerable experience on both sides of the courtroom. Before moving into a private practice that involved both civil litigation and criminal defense cases, he served as assistant district attorney for Dalton, Georgia.
Lee went on to serve as city attorney for Ellijay, Georgia; as county attorney for Gilmer County, Georgia, during the 1990s—a time of transition for the county from a rural Appalachian community to a suburb in the greater Atlanta metropolitan region; as special Assistant Attorney General for the state Department of Transportation and, also, for the state Department of Human Resources — dealing with rights-of-way cases, title transfers and condemnation litigation for the former, with cases for the Division of Family and Children Services for the latter.
Lee can also boast extensive experience in the creation of stoneware pottery, stemming from his family’s pottery business. An active member of the Lexington Baptist Church, he resides with his wife, Rebecca, on their family farm in Rockbridge County, where Taylor says the current crop is horses. The Taylor's have four children.
Kent A. Gibson joined Spencer & Taylor in June 2013 and works primarily in the Lexington office. Kent is a magna cum laude graduate of the George Mason University School of Law. He grew up in Colorado and did his undergraduate work at Fresno Pacific University, where he studied business administration and English.
During law school, Kent served as an editor of the Law Review and had the honor of teaching legal research and writing to first year law students. Also during law school, Kent served in the domestic relations legal clinic, where he assisted low-income individuals with divorces and related legal services.
After earning his law degree, Kent clerked for the Honorable Bruce D. White of the Fairfax County Circuit Court for two years and spent one year doing complex land use and zoning litigation in northern Virginia before accepting his position with Spencer & Taylor. Kent now resides in Rockbridge County with his wife and daughter. He enjoys spending time with his family, camping, running, and working on home improvement projects.
Jamie Maxwell grew up on a small family farm in Maryland. Upon graduation from high school, he joined the United States Army, becoming an Army Ranger in the 2nd Ranger Battalion. After three years on active duty, Maxwell returned to Maryland for five years in the Army National Guard while working construction to put himself through the University of Maryland at College Park. Maxwell finished his legal education at Washington & Lee School of Law in 2000, which launched his legal career in the Rockbridge area. After several years in private practice in Lexington, Maxwell became an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for Rockbridge County and the City of Lexington in 2004.
In his time as a prosecutor, Jamie had extensive trial experience to include jury trials. His broad background and experience in criminal, contract, and construction law will give clients confidence whatever their legal need.
Maxwell and his family have established a cattle farm and built their home in Rockbridge County. An avid outdoorsman, Maxwell has served as a Hunter Education Instructor for nearly 10 years; as well as served area youth by being a leader in local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for 11 years.
